Selling online in India has stopped being a single decision. You are no longer choosing between 'my website' and 'a marketplace' — most successful sellers now run both, plus WhatsApp, plus an ONDC presence. The job of your e-commerce site has shifted from being the only channel to being the one channel you actually own.
Start with payments, because that is where sales are lost
UPI now dominates Indian checkout by a wide margin. Your gateway must offer UPI intent and QR alongside cards, net banking and wallets, and it must work on a mid-range Android phone on a patchy connection. Cash on delivery still matters outside metros, but pair it with partial prepayment if returns are hurting you.
ONDC: worth the effort, with realistic expectations
The Open Network for Digital Commerce lets a small seller appear in multiple buyer apps without paying marketplace-level commissions. It is genuinely useful for grocery, fashion, home goods and local retail, but it is not free traffic. Your catalogue quality, pricing and fulfilment reliability decide whether you get repeat orders.
Delivery expectations have moved
Quick commerce has trained customers to expect a delivery estimate before they buy. Show real, pincode-based delivery timelines at the product level. A shopper in Hyderabad seeing 'delivered in 2 days' converts better than one seeing 'shipping calculated at checkout'.
The build itself
Catalogue structure first
Clean categories, real attributes, and one product per page with unique copy. Duplicate manufacturer descriptions across two hundred products is the single most common reason small stores never rank.
Speed on mobile
Compressed images, lazy loading, minimal scripts. Every additional second on a product page measurably reduces add-to-cart rate.
Checkout in as few steps as possible
Guest checkout, autofill for pincode and address, and no forced account creation. Ask for an account after the order, not before it.
Trust signals that answer objections
Return policy in plain language, GST invoice availability, a real address and phone number, and visible reviews.
What you can skip
Loyalty programmes, complex bundling and a mobile app all come later. In year one, the wins are product page quality, checkout friction and repeat purchase over WhatsApp.
