'Should we build an app?' is usually the wrong question. The right one is 'what do we actually want an app to do?' — and for most Indian businesses the honest answer is served by a progressive web app at a tenth of the cost.
What a PWA is, plainly
Your website, built so a phone treats it like an app. Customers add it to their home screen with an icon, open it without a browser bar, use core features on a weak connection, and can receive push notifications. No app store, no download, no review delays.
The price comparison
Native Android + iOS app
₹3,00,000 upward for anything substantial, two codebases to maintain, annual developer account fees, and a new release cycle for every change. Realistically a long-term commitment, not a one-time cost.
PWA layered on a good website
Typically ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 on top of an existing modern site, depending on what works offline and whether you need push notifications. One codebase, instant updates, no store gatekeeping.
For a retailer in Hyderabad, a clinic in Pune or a distributor in Nizamabad, that difference decides whether the project happens at all.
Why it suits the Indian market
Most people will not download an app for a business they have used once — but they will tap 'add to home screen'. Storage is tight on mid-range phones, data is a consideration, and connections drop. A cached PWA keeps working through all of it.
When you genuinely need native
Background GPS tracking, Bluetooth hardware, heavy camera or AR work, biometric integrations, or a game. If your product depends on deep device access, a PWA will fight you. Everything else — ordering, booking, catalogues, dashboards, loyalty, content — works fine.
What it requires technically
A fast mobile-first site, HTTPS, a service worker for caching and a web app manifest. If your site is already well built, adding PWA capability is a small step with a large perceived upgrade. If your site is slow and dated, fix that first — a PWA wrapper around a bad site is still a bad site.
A sensible sequence
Build or fix the website properly. Add PWA capability. Measure whether people install it and come back. Only consider native if you hit a genuine device-level limit — and by then you will know exactly what to build.
